Brazilian attacker Wendell Lira, who won the FIFA Puskás Award on Monday, will have to wait a little longer to buy his own home.
There is no prize money for the winners of the different categories in the Ballon d’Or ceremony, and although the achievement earned him international recognition, Wendell returns to Brazil with just the trophy given by FIFA. Wendell Lira, who doesn’t experience a lifestyle similar to the other stars that took part in the Ballon d’Or gala, lives with his wife, Ludymila, and his 2-year-old daughter in the home of his parents-in-law. After a promising start in the youth categories of Goiás, the attacker suffered serious knee injuries and underwent financial difficulties after his contract ended. Wendell came to work in the cafeteria with his mother, Maria Edileuza, to help with family expenses. When he was nominated for the Puskás Award, Wendell received enquiries from other clubs, but opted to sign for Vila Nova because they offered a contract until the end of 2016, representing a bigger guarantee to the player.
