22-year-old Boca Juniors striker Jonathan Calleri is the player Atlético Mineiro seeks to strengthen their attack to compete in the 2016 Copa Libertadores.
To bring the youngster, Atlético Mineiro has a well-known operation planned and it worked successfully two years ago. According to UOL Esporte, the possible arrival of Calleri at Atlético Mineiro would be similar to the deal that took defender Nicolás Otamendi to the club in 2014. In January 2014, the defender who currently plays for Manchester City, was sold to Valencia by FC Porto. However, the Spanish club didn’t have room for non-EU players, and hence Otamendi was loaned out to Atlético for six months. Despite playing just 19 matches, the Argentine was a fan favourite at the club, and was later included in the national team’s preliminary squad for the 2014 World Cup.
Boca Juniors and Calleri have already made it clear that a deal to move to Inter Milan is practically complete, and the player was expected to join Bologna on loan. Inter Milan would pay around €11 million for his services, and the idea of Atlético is that he will then be loaned out to Brazil for six months. Argentine press reported on Monday that Calleri had left the club’s camp in Cardales to speak with the Brazilian club. Almost all of Atlético’s leaders are now in the United States where the club have their pre-season, but director of football Eduardo Maluf hasn’t travelled.
