Brazilian attacker Wendell Lira, who recently signed for Vila Nova, won the FIFA Puskás Award on Monday in Switzerland after his goal was voted the best of the year.
Wendell Lira came top in the poll and received more votes than Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and AS Roma’s Alessandro Florenzi. In fact, the Italian had scored an incredible goal from the halfway line against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League group stages, but won just 7.1% of the votes. Florenzi says he was not disappointed with the result and stated that he was like a kid in a park, referring to the higher population of Brazil, compared to Italy. He told Gazzetta dello Sport: “Disappointment? Not really, I’ve lived this day as a kid in a children’s park. The victory of Lira? Besides, Italy is smaller than Brazil. I will try to score the best goal next year, although I fear that it will not be easy.”
