Following the departure of Jádson, Renato Augusto and Ralf, it was Vágner Love’s time to say goodbye to Corinthians on Thursday.
The Brasileirão champions have sold the 31-year-old striker to French side AS Monaco for a transfer fee of €1 million. Vágner Love also had a proposal to play in Chinese football, where he has already worked before, but he chose Europe. The player’s wife is pregnant, and he believes that a return to Asia at this point could complicate the family’s adaptation. With Corinthians, Love had a contract until July 2016 and was free to sign a pre-contract with any team from February. The club had begun talks over a renewal, but accepted that they couldn’t compete with the values offered to him.
Love was criticized by fans for much of last season after failing to replace Paolo Guerrero who had left for Flamengo. However, he found form in the latter rounds of the Brazilian Championship, and helped the club lift the title. He finished the campaign with 14 goals, second only to Ricardo Oliveira of Santos.
