Barcelona forward Neymar says he is hopeful over a new contract with the club, but will not rule out the prospect of a move, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Real Madrid poised to pounce. The Brazilian’s contract expires in 2018 and the Catalan club are keen to tie him to a new deal.

The Seleção captain’s form has earned him a place on the three man shortlist for the Ballon D’Or and his partnership with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez is considered one of the greatest in the history of the game. However, Neymar stopped short of insisting he would definitely not consider a move away from the European champions.

“We’re talking about a renewal right now.” Asked if he was optimistic, he said: “Yes, of course.”

Asked about the City links, Neymar was non-committal, “Yes, yes,” but asked if he would join Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium, he replied: “No, not that.”

However, when asked if he would rule out an exit altogether, he said: “I don’t know, life is long.”

Pressed on whether he would rule out an immediate exit, he remained vague: “I don’t know either.”

Neymar also thanked former Barcelona star Ronaldinho, after the craque described Neymar as his heir.

“Ronnie is one of the greats, a star,” he said. “He is the best Brazilian player to have passed through Barcelona.”
