Brazilian striker Leandro Damião can return to Internacional in 2016, but the club do not have high expectations about a transfer due to the player’s complicated contract situation with Santos.
According to Globo Esporte, Internacional are monitoring the outcome of the case between the player and Santos with interest. On Tuesday, Cruzeiro had announced that they will not renew the deal with Damião and released him, meaning he won’t be part of the squad that will face Internacional in the last game of this year’s Brasileirão. A meeting between the player’s agent, Vinícius Prates, and Internacional vice-president, Carlos Pellegrini, happened in Porto Alegre to discuss more about the subject. In June, Damião filed a complaint against Santos in court due to unpaid salary, and won the right to terminate his contract, which is still subject to an appeal. Hence, Internacional takes a more conservative stance, and they don’t plan to enter into a conflict with the Santos board.
Santos signed Damião in 2013 with the help of investment group Doyen Sports, for a deal worth €13 million.
