Aged 12, with his parents already in Portugal, Matheus Pereira was still in Brazil along with his siblings and grandmother, and was on trial at Cruzeiro for a month.
However, Matheus Pereira had an opportunity to travel to Portugal, and when the Brazilian club called the player to take him to their academy, he was on the other side of the Atlantic. He told GOAL: “I never got to make an official game for Cruzeiro. It’s kind of funny because I did tests for a month and was approved, but when they called me to tell what had happened, I was already in Portugal. I started training at a club called Trafaria. Then I was seen by a scout of Sporting, which led me to train in their academy. They liked me and I started training in the youth teams until I reached the professionals.”
The 19-year-old made his first competitive appearance for Sporting in October in the UEFA Europa League against Beşiktaş, and also scored braces over Vilafranquense and Skënderbeu Korçë.
