19-year-old forward Gabriel Barbosa was the hero of the night as Santos defeated rivals Palmeiras 1-0 at the Vila Belmiro on Wednesday in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final.
After missing a penalty in the first half, Gabigol made amends in the second period by scoring the goal that won the game for his team. Gabigol was a subject for discussion in the program Redação SporTV on Thursday, and he was widely praised by journalist Carlos Cereto, which sees room for the player in the Brazilian national team. For André Rizek, the Santos frontman is a better player than Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, who was one of the options of Dunga in previous call-ups. Firmino was called up for the first two World Cup qualifiers of Brazil, but after being removed from the squad due to an injury, he sat out of the fixtures with Argentina and Peru. Rizek said: “For me, Gabigol is already a better player now than Firmino, who has been called up before.”
Cereto has criticized Gabigol many times on other occasions, but said that he has been really impressed with the player who’s also a regular for Brazil Olympic team.
