Atletico Mineiro coach Levir Culpi has left the club with immediate effect this afternoon. Culpi met with the Galo board last night and it would appear the parties agreed not to renew his contract. Culpi took training in Belo Horizonte this morning and said goodbye to players and staff, before confirming his departure from the club with immediate effect to local media.

Culpi was Brasileirao’s longest serving coach, having taken the reigns at Atletico 18 months ago from Paulo Autuori. He won the Copa do Brasil last season, as well as Recopa Sudamericana. Galo will confirm 2nd place in the Championship if they avoid defeat at Gremio on Sunday. Atletico were challenging Corinthians for the title, but began to fall away from the runaway leaders. Galo have also conceded an astonishing 45 goals this season, more than Joinville, who have already been relegated.

Culpi is already being linked with the vacant manager’s job at Sao Paulo, whilst Muricy Ramalho is the current favourite to take over from Culpi at Atletico, who will compete in the 2016 Copa Libertadores. A tearful Levir told reporters, “I need to enjoy with you the moments we had. I’d rather see that side. There was even a possibility of continuing until the last game, but the board arrived at a conclusion that we should not continue our work. They have the possibility of new thinking for the coming season.”

Culpi, ending his fourth spell as Galo coach continued, “I once again send a hug to everyone who felt the defeats like me who felt the pain, sometimes unexplained, sometimes my fault. The great moments as well. It’s like a marriage. We have a few fights, but deep down we love it.”
