CEO of the Ukrainian team, Sergei Palkin, has revealed that CBF were not fully convinced by their Brazilian players until they were bought by top European clubs.
The likes of Willian, Fernandinho and Douglas Costa failed to get much attention when they were at Shakhtar, but now they’re key players at Chelsea, Manchester City and Bayern Munich respectively. In an interview published on Wednesday by the newspaper El País, he said the confederation had a kind of prejudice with the football in Ukraine. He said: “I wondered why they were not invited to the national team and they said they couldn’t watch the league matches in Ukraine. In the twenty-first century! It was ridiculous. For CBF, Ukraine was a country impossible to locate, whose sporting exploits were never passed on the news. We contacted CBF to let them know we had some really good players, and so they began to pay attention to them. Still, they were not fully convinced until they were signed by Chelsea, Bayern and City.”
