19-year-old forward Gabriel Barbosa was the hero of the night as Santos defeated rivals Palmeiras 1-0 at the Vila Belmiro on Wednesday in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final.
After missing a penalty in the first half, the player made amends in the second period by scoring the goal that won the game for his team. Coach Dorival Júnior revealed that, during halftime, Gabigol had promised he would decide the game. Dorival said: “Gabriel has personality, doesn’t open the mouth. Penalty, it’s natural, can go out, or the goalkeeper can save. I didn’t have to say anything. The player knows what happened. He himself wanted to recover and said, ‘Professor, I will decide this game’.”
With 15 goals, Gabigol is the biggest goalscorer of Santos in the tournament’s history. He said: “That goal I scored can go down in history, and if God willing, we will get to be champions in their home. I thank God for this moment in my life. But the most important thing is that the fans showed up in full force, supported and Dorival gives me confidence. I can lose three, four goals or a penalty but my focus will be the same. It was emotional when they screamed my name, it’s a symbol that they have confidence in us.”
