Aged 21, Neílton hasn’t even completed 50 games as a professional, but the Série B triumph was the second consecutive national trophy of the striker’s career.
Brasileirão champion with Cruzeiro last season, Neílton was one of the highlights of Botafogo’s successful campaign this year. Last year, Neílton barely played and did little on the field for Cruzeiro, but for Botafogo, however, it was a different story. Neílton arrived in August as a player for the starting XI and scored in six of the 17 games he played. In addition to the Série A and Série B titles, he has also won the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior, the most important competition in the U20 Brazilian football calendar. During the successful campaign in 2012 with Santos, he scored three goals in the semifinal against Palmeiras and another one in the final against Goiás.
According to Globo Esporte, despite Neílton’s desire to stay, his situation is complicated, and the striker, who has a contract until the end of the month, is unlikely to remain at Botafogo. The Rio club currently pays just 25% of his wages, and the remaining 75% are up to Cruzeiro, who owns the economic rights of the player. But Cruzeiro wants Neílton to stay at Botafogo only if the Série B champions can pay the full salary, which for now, is out of the question.
