Only Brazilian representative in the 2015 FIFA Puskás Award candidates, striker Wendell Lira will contest with the likes of Lionel Messi and Carlos Tévez for the best goal of the year.
However, the 26-year-old is currently without a club. Wendell has been unemployed since September when he played for Tombense-MG. He helped Goianésia to reach the semifinals of the Campeonato Goiano earlier this year, and scored an overhead kick goal which has now been nominated for FIFA’s Puskás Award. He was quoted in Globo Esporte: “I went to Tombense to play in the Série C, but I didn’t get much chances there, especially since the change of coach. Two months ago, I was unemployed, and training in the gym and also analysing some things for next season.”
He added: “I’ve had three proposals, one from Goiás, which I can resolve today! But now I have no condition to decide anything. I have to wait, and hope this goal will help me. Many people are calling me; press in Spain, Portugal and from various corners of Brazil. I will wait a while to decide the future.”
