Santos forward Gabriel Barbosa has drawn attention with his “trivela pass” or “three fingers pass” this season, showing remarkable technique at a young age of 19.
Gabigol has registered 7 assists this year, and 3 of them were passes with the outside of his boot, against Fluminense, in the Brasileirão, and Figueirense and São Paulo, in Copa do Brasil. He says that the move is not planned, but prefers to make these passes instead of using his weaker foot. He said: “Comes from improvisation. It’s difficult, but sometimes there’s not enough time to adjust the body and hit with the left foot. How I play around, there’s not much ease on the right foot. I think the three fingers passes are easier.”
He added: “I hope that I’m known for this move. My dad always says that the old players did this. There’s Quaresma who scores goals and gives these passes. I’ve seen some videos of him.”
Gabigol’s teammate Ricardo Oliveira is also impressed with the youngster’s quality. He said: “I don’t dare to do it. One must have this quality, to adjust the body and hit properly. He does it to perfection. It’s not the first time he does it. He’s a player who has surprised me a lot.”
