Chelsea striker Diego Costa is understood to have spent the night in hospital, after injuring his ribs in Chelsea’s Capital One Cup defeat to Stoke City on Tuesday night. Costa was substituted after 32 minutes, following a heavy collision with Potters duo Charlie Adam and Ryan Shawcross. It is suspected that the Brazilian striker may have broken some ribs.
In his post match press conference, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho confirmed that Costa had been taken to hospital and that he did not yet know the extent of the injury, "He is in the hospital – I don"t know. I don’t know [if he will play this weekend]. I think he punched himself." Chelsea play Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday and have a Champions League tie against Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday evening. Mourinho will hope to have Costa available as Chelsea seek to halt their poor run of form.
