One of the surprises from Dunga’s Brazil squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Peru was the absence of Grêmio goalkeeper Marcelo Gröhe.
Gröhe understands Dunga’s decision, and during a news conference on Tuesday, he revealed that he is not 100% fit yet, and feels pain in his right shoulder. He also confirmed that there was contact with national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar. This time, Dunga called up a friend and former teammate of Gröhe; Corinthians goalkeeper Cássio. He said: “Dunga was right, I talked to the doctor and I said what I was feeling. And he made the decision. Of course I’m still in pain, but nothing that limits me, or that hinders the game. But we are taking special care in training to improve. Regarding the selection, quiet. That’s it. Dunga said I’m not 100%, I am not and I was not. Goalkeepers that were called up are excellent and worthy of a call up.”
He added: “Cássio is a great goalkeeper. I grew up with Cássio here, spent the youth team days together, we went up the same year, shared an apartment… He went his way and I remained at Grêmio. He has had a great championship, and is about to be champion, so worthy of a call up. I am happy because he is a friend, I have so much respect.”
