Brazilian full-backs Marcelo and Danilo were on the scoresheet for Real Madrid on Saturday, as they defeated Celta Vigo 3-1. The win keeps the pressure up on Barcelona, who sit 1 point and 1 place ahead of Madrid at the top of La Liga. Predictably, it was Cristiano Ronaldo who opened the scoring after just 8 minutes, but thereafter, it was the Brazilian laterais that took centre stage.

Danilo made it 2-0, raiding forward from right back, before controlling Jese’s pass and steering it into the net. Left-back Marcelo earned his man of the match award, Celta reduced the deficit and Marcelo made a crucial goalline clearance with the scores at 2-1. He then made the result safe, scoring a third goal for Madrid with virtually the last kick of the game.

The battle between Marcelo and Filipe Luis for a starting spot in the national side is an interesting one. Marcelo is in the form of his career for Madrid, but appears to struggle to carry that insouciance into his performances for Brazil. Danilo, meanwhile, has been injured for much of the season and missed out on the Copa America in June. However, he looks well placed to take over from Dani Alves as Brazil’s first choice right back.
