20-year-old defender Marlon, who claims to have had proposals to leave Fluminense, admits the European dream seduces him but wants to win a trophy before leaving. Fluminense are in the Copa do Brasil semifinals, and Marlon who remembers his idol Thiago Silva winning the tournament in 2007, hopes to lift the cup this year. He said: “Kenedy? We talked a lot. He said that it"s all different [in Europe], which is another life compared to Brazilian football. It made me anxious to leave, but as I have my goals, I have to be cautious and put them first. I have in mind that in my career I want to be recognized by titles. I want to have at least one achievement in every club I play. Kenedy left, Gérson is sold…but I decided to stay. I had proposals, but today at Fluminense, I have the chance to play the semifinals of Copa do Brasil and perhaps, the final. We hope that we can win the competition."
He added: “The day I go out, as happened with other players like Thiago Silva, Marcelo, Kenedy and now Gérson, they carry the weight of representing Fluminense wherever they are. One day I will have this opportunity too, God willing."
When asked if a transfer is inevitable in the next window, he said: “I don"t see it as inevitable, but see it as a chance to help the club and help me too. If there is a deal that is good for all of us… But first I need to get a title for Fluminense."
About the 2007 Copa do Brasil title, he says: “I was 12. Fluminense won 1-0 with goal from Roger. I have good memories. Including Thiago Silva, who is my main reference. I have very high expectations to win this title as well. I"d be matching my idol, my reference. It"d be extremely important to me. I"m very confident."
