Although the senior national team disappointed in their defeat to Chile in the World Cup qualifiers on Thursday, the U23 side bounced back from a 2-1 loss to France last month by dismantling a poor Dominican Republic at the Arena Amazônia in Manaus.
18-year-old Palmeiras revelation Gabriel Jesus, on his début for the Olympic national team, opened the scoring after 12 minutes with a sweetly taken finish after receiving a pass from Lazio’s Felipe Anderson. In the 27th minute, Maicon scored the second for Brazil and three minutes later, Grêmio forward Luan turned in a cross from full-back João Pedro to make it 3-0 at half time. The Brazilians then scored a further three more in the second period of the game, with Internacional attacking midfielder Valdívia firing home the fourth after the hour mark. Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred then found the back of the net with a powerful shout from distance before Gabriel Barbosa completed the scoring with a beautiful goal in the last minute.
On Monday, the Olympic team returns to the Arena Amazônia; this time to face Haiti.
