Called up to Brazil’s Olympic national squad for the first time, Palmeiras winger Gabriel Jesus has been in the starting XI during the team’s two training sessions.
Brazil, led by Rogério Micalle, are preparing for the upcoming friendly games at Manaus against Dominican Republic, on Friday, and Haiti, on Monday. Main highlight of the side that took part in the U20 World Cup in New Zealand, Gabriel Jesus waited for his opportunity at club level and quickly turned out into a regular in the Palmeiras XI. Despite being used as starter for the Olympic side, the attacker believes that the competition for a place in attack is still open. Gabriel says the experience in New Zealand has helped him get used to wearing the national team shirt. He said: “It is very important to be part of the previous selections. I was pleased to participate in the U20 World Cup and I’m happy to be here in the U23 squad. You come here more relaxed to wear the shirt. That’s what matters; do a good job and keep quiet.”
He added: “Who takes advantage will win the position. This is the national team, right? There are many quality players. We have to get our space with maturity and respect to teammates.”
