An announcement is expected on Wednesday as to whether São Paulo coach Juan Carlos Osorio is to accept an offer to take over as manager of the Mexican national team. The Colombian was reportedly offered the role by the Mexican FA last week and Osorio initially told the press that he would discuss the proposal with his family over the weekend before coming to a decision. The Mexico job is a notoriously difficult one, with El Tri having gone through seven coaches in the last nine years.

Previous incumbent, the colourful Miguel Herrera, was sacked recently after an alleged physical altercation with a reporter. Osorio has done a steady job at São Paulo, with his team outside of the top 4 on goal difference and having qualified for the semi-finals of Copa do Brasil. It now seems certain that Osorio will accept the offer, with only details to iron out now. Reports suggest that Osorio would like to stay with his club until the Brazilian season ends in November, before taking the reigns with Mexico full-time.

However, the Mexican FA want the new coach in place for the October friendly against the USA and certainly by the time Mexico begin their World Cup qualifying campaign in November. Mexico’s Sporting Director Santiago Baños confirmed that discussions have taken place with Osorio, “We have an interim coach (Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti), so there is some time to negotiate and see the possibilities we have. He (Osorio) is one of the candidates we spoke. with The federation has it in mind. He has a contract with São Paulo, so there is nothing set so far. We are respectful and look forward to knowing the decision.”

Tricolor play a Serie A fixture against Fluminense in the Maracanã on Wednesday, which could well prove to be Osorio’s final game in charge.
