Neymar made his 100th appearance for Barcelona and marked the occasion with a goal, but was unable to prevent his side from falling to a 2-1 defeat at Sevilla. The Brazil forward scored a second half penalty, with Barca already two goals down to reduce the deficit. However, despite a late rally, Neymar and Barca were powerless to prevent defeat.

Neymar was exceptionally unfortunate not to add to his tally, not least when his first half free kick fizzed off of the post, hit Sevilla goalkeeper Rico on the back, hit the inside of the post and rolled along the goal line before being cleared to safety. The Sevilla keeper also made a series of inspired saves to stop Neymar’s landmark game becoming more memorable. With Lionel Messi injured, responsibility rested with he and Luis Suarez, but Sevilla were able to grind their way to victory with second half goals from Krohn-Dehli and Iborra.

Neymar joined the Catalan side in the summer of 2013 from Santos and has been a revelation, playing in a star studded front three alongside Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi. Neymar has 58 goals in his century of games for the club. In May he became only the 8th player in history to have notched goals in both the Champions League and the Copa Libertadores finals. He was an integral part of Barcelona’s treble winning side of 2014-15. With Messi expected to be absent for another few weeks, Barca will look to the Brazilian to keep their title ambitions on track. He will now have a fortnight to rest, as he is suspended for Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Venezuela.
