On 17 September, when Dunga announced Brazilian national team"s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Venezuela, Alexandre Pato was not on the list.
Hours later, at night, Pato"s São Paulo played out a goalless draw at the Morumbi against Chapecoense, and Dunga questioned the player"s emotional state when asked why he preferred Ricardo Oliveira. Dunga also defended the selection of the 35-year-old striker by by mentioning how the people reacted when he picked Douglas Costa for the national team out of nowhere. He was quoted in UOL: “Pato"s past in Europe has no influence. Everyone has a second chance to improve compared to the last one. We"re talking about the emotional issue. He cried because he was not called-up, and no longer had the same productivity on the same day. The coach [Osório] already came to see that he was shaken and therefore, didn"t have the same impact. The emotional side matters a lot and this is all information to us. The fans can be sure that we are gathering all possible information."
He added: “Ricardo Oliveira is the top-scorer of the Campeonato Brasileiro. He scores from the right, from the left, from outside the box, inside the box, at home, and away from home… He plays in the position we needed, but Pato plays on the wing where we already have Douglas Costa. In fact, when I picked Douglas Costa, they said he wasn"t good enough. But he became good once he went to Bayern!"
