Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has claimed the players wanted to beat Aston Villa for manager Brendan Rodgers.

The Reds secured a nervy 3-2 win at Anfield on Saturday, with the three points helping to ease the pressure on the under pressure Rodgers.

Speaking after that tie, Lucas outlined that the players were fully behind their manager and that they played out his game plan to ensure they won.

“We wanted to win for the manager,” he stated, as reported by BBC Sport.
“We know what has been said about him and we think we showed we are a group of players behind him and trying to make everything right.
“We know the pressure is on him but we wanted to play the way he wants us to play, and I think we did that.”
