Pelé condemned the behavior of Chelsea front-man Diego Costa in Saturday’s derby against Arsenal in the Premier League.
On the eve of the opening of an exhibition in London to celebrate 75 years as the King of Football, he said the Brazilian-born Spanish player sent a bad message to children. Costa received a 3-match ban from the disciplinary committee this week, after the referee did not see him putting his hands on the face of Arsenal’s French defender Laurent Koscielny. He said: It is not a good message for children. He didn’t get a red card, but he was charged. It was dirty. Unfortunately so many things like this happen on the pitch and this is not good. That’s clear. It is not good for football.”
When he was asked what advice he might give to a young player as good as him, Pelé claimed: “As good as me? Nobody. I used to say that there is nobody as good as me, and I would be asked if there ever would be anybody as good as me. But my mother and my father closed the machine. There will be no new Pelé.”
He added: “I was invited to come to Europe many times, to come to Real Madrid, Milan, Manchester United but I was okay. Santos was the best team at that time.”
