Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva believes his performance against Arsenal secured his future at the club.

The Brazil international had been linked with various moves elsewhere over the summer transfer window, but ultimately remained at Liverpool.

His situation had initially seemed bleak when he was overlooked for the opening few games of the season, but showed his worth in the 0-0 draw at Arsenal, when given what could have been a last chance to impress.

“A couple of things happened during the first couple of games that gave me the chance to play against Arsenal, and I believe it was because I was training so hard and was well prepared that I was able to come in and have a good game,” he stated, as reported by the Mirror.

“Maybe if there hadn’t been the Arsenal game, I wouldn’t be here now. But I always believe that things happen for a reason.”

Lucas has gone on to feature in three Premier League matches since starring against Arsenal and could start when Liverpool host Carlisle United in the Football League Cup on Wednesday.
