The Brazil international arrived at the club from Hoffenheim in the summer transfer window, but as yet, has struggled to make an impact in his early appearances.

Firmino was signed on the back of an impressive stint in the Bundesliga, where his combination of technique, skill and craft earned him as a reputation as one of the league’s most exciting and unpredictable midfielders.

His versatility – he can play in the centre or as a wide attacking midfield, as well as in a forward berth – will undoubtedly have attracted Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, while his ability to score and assist goals in equal measure was perhaps, his most eye catching strength.

Firmino was brought in to help cover the loss of Raheem Sterling to Manchester City, but if he was expected to match the England international’s exploits immediately, then his arrival has not quite had the desired effect, as yet.

Firmino was not helped by his participation in this summer’s Copa America and was forced to start as substitute in Liverpool’s opening two Premier League matches, which they won.

Since then, he has started the next three – a draw and two losses – and though he has fleetingly shone, he is yet to announce himself.

An issue for Firmino is finding his best position. So far, he has often come from deeper than he did at Hoffenheim and has not gone into the opposition penalty area as often as he might desire.

With time, he should adapt to Liverpool’s approach and they, in turn, will understand how to get the best out of him.

Firmino’s talent is unquestionable and though Liverpool need him to step up now, he may need a period of adjustment before stepping up as a protagonist.
