Criticized by Fluminense supporters for showing a lack of commitment on the field following the announcement of his transfer to Roma, 18-year-old midfielder Gérson confirmed that he himself asked to stay in Brazil until 2016.
Gérson ensures that he talked with the club and asked to stay until the end of this year because of his affection for Fluminense. Gérson had a great start to 2015 as he was highly praised for his performances during the Campeonato Carioca and seems confident to repeat it. He told SporTV: “If I wished to be at Roma, then I’d be staying there now. I talked with Fluminense’s board and asked to come back here because I have a very special affection for this club. I asked to stay here until the end of the year because I wanted to fight for titles and a place in the Libertadores. We have a chance to reach the Libertadores and we still have the Copa do Brasil. I really want to win a title with Fluminense as a professional player. I asked to stay, and I’m giving my best on the field.”
He added: “I am working hard, and I always try to improve in every game. My head is at Fluminense.”
