Roma have contacted Santos to discuss a possible move for defender Emerson, according to reports.

The website of respected Sky Sport Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims that the Serie A outfit are interested in securing Emerson, as the defence at Head Coach Rudi Garcia’s disposal continues to be adjusted ahead of the new season.

France international Lucas Digne is expected to arrive from Paris Saint-Germain to help cover at left full-back, but with Federico Balzaretti retiring, José Holebas moving to Watford and Ashley Cole being released, Garcia’s options are limited. As a result of this, Emerson is seemingly being targeted to deepen the tactician’s squad.

The 21 year-old has only just returned to Santos, after spending last season on loan in Italy at Palermo.

With them, he made nine appearances in all competitions, but was largely left as a substitute and also had an injury at the end of the campaign.

At Santos, he has faired better, making 17 appearances since debuting against XV de Piracicaba in January 2012 and also scoring one goal.

Earlier in his career, he also represented Brazil at under-17 level and was capped 15 times between 2011 and 2012.
