Ricardo Gomes has taken charge of Botafogo for the first time as he plots an immediate return to the Brasileiro Série A.

The 50 year old has taken over from Renê Simoes with the team currently a point clear at the top of the Série B after 13 games. He watched their 0-0 draw with Criciuma on Tuesday evening before taking his first training session yesterday.

Botafogo were relegated last year and are in the Série B for only the second time in their entire history. Ricardo Gomes has previously managed a host of clubs including Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco.

Gomes also had a succesful playing career and played for Brazil in two Copa Americas and the 1990 World Cup.
