Atlético de Madrid have completed a deal to bring Chelsea defender Filipe Luís back to the club.

The La Liga outfit took to their official website to confirm the transfer, with Filipe returning to Atlético just 12 months after leaving for London.

“Filipe Luís is a new player of Atlético de Madrid,” said the statement. “The red and white team and Chelsea have reached an agreement for the transfer of the winger. The Brazilian footballer signs for the next four seasons.”

Atlético are reported to have parted with around €16 million to secure Filipe from Chelsea, while his contract will run until June 2019.

That transfer fee represents a €4 million profit on the €20 million they are believed to have received for him in July 2014 and he returns as a possible replacement for Guilherme Siqueira, who has been strongly linked with Juventus.

Filipe has long been expected to return to Atlético, following a difficult season with Chelsea.

The 29 year-old won the Premier League and League Cup, but spent much of the campaign operating as a reserve for first choice left full-back César Azpilicueta and was sporadically used.

Domestically, he featured just 15 times throughout the campaign, with his record in all competitions standings at 26 appearances.

Back at Atlético, he is expected to be a regular once more and he will hope his second spell at the club is as successful as his first.

After arriving from Deportivo in July 2010 for a reported fee of €12 million, he went on to make 180 appearances and won four major honours, including the 2013-14 La Liga title.
