Santos are currently enjoying their best form since winning the Paulista Championship. After new boss Dorival Júnior has taken over, their has been an improvement in team performance with three wins from four matches, scoring eight goals in the process and conceding just two. On Sunday, the team beat Joinville in Vila Belmiro, reaching 16 points and moving up two places in the table to 15th.

Werley said: "It was an important result, our second win in a row [after Wednesday’s defeat of Sport in the Copa do Brasil). This builds confidence and gives moral to the group and to the coaching staff. Training is great during the week, and this is reflected on the field. We had a very good start to the year, winning the Paulista title. Now we are improving."

After beating Joinville (2-0), Sport (3×1) and Figueirense (3-0), Santos will have a series of three games against opponents around them in the league – against Flamengo away from home and Coritiba and Vasco da Gama at home. The first challenge comes on Sunday, giving Dorival a whole week to work with his charges.

Werley continued: "This is critical. The longer we have to train the better. We are already demonstrating what Dorival is asking, playing with intensity, speed and aggression at the time of attack."

On loan from Grêmio since early 2015 Werley has played 33 matches and scored two goals in the Santos shirt.
