Sporting CP have confirmed the signing of River Plate forward Teófilo Gutiérrez.

The Primeira Liga outfit took to their official website on Saturday to announce that the Colombian international – capped 43 times since debuting in 2009 – has agreed a contract until June 2018 and has a €40 million release clause.

Sporting are believed to have parted with around €3.4 million to secure Gutiérrez, with the move coming as a blow to Corinthians.

The São Paulo based side were believed to have been pursuing him as a replacement for Paolo Guerrero, who recently left to join Flamengo.

Reports had suggested in recent weeks that deal was close to being concluded, but Sporting have ultimately secured his signature.

Gutiérrez leaves River Plate after netting 28 goals in 67 matches and being part of a side that won the Copa Sudamericana and Argentine Primera División Torneo Final in 2014 and the Recopa Sudamericana this year.

Earlier in his career, he has also won honours with Trabzonspor and Cruz Azul, while he’s had spells with Racing Club, Lanús, Barranquilla and, most prominently, Junior, where he first started to come to the fore in Colombia.
