New signing Fernando has hailed Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero, following his move from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The midfielder completed his long protracted switch on Monday and has agreed a contract until June 2020, with Sampdoria parting with a reported fee of €8 million – paid over two years – to secure him.

Writing on his personal Instagram account, Fernando outlined his desire to succeed at Sampdoria and singled out Ferrero for showing faith in him.

“I’m very happy and motivated by this new challenge,” he stated, as reported by website Footbal Italia.

“I want to thank Sampdoria, and in particular President Massimo Ferrero, who believed in me and what I can do.

“I hope to repay that trust with great dedication to the club and the fans.”

Fernando’s move to Sampdoria brought to an end his two year stay in Ukraine. The 23 year-old was signed by Shakhtar from Grêmio for a reported fee of €11 million in July 2013 and went on to feature 47 seven times, scoring three goals. He also won two major honours, one of which was the 2013-14 Ukrainian League title.

His arrival at Sampdoria coincides with the departure of midfielder Pedro Obiang to West Ham United, while former Paraguay international Édgar Barreto has also been brought in from Palermo to cover his loss.
