Fiorentina are leading Napoli in the race to secure Grêmio midfielder Walace, according to reports.

Sky Sport Italia, as cited by website Forza Italian Football, claims that Napoli had been in pursuit of the 20 year-old in recent months, but since the summer transfer window opened, Fiorentina have come into contention.

The report suggests that a bid of around €5.5 million has been made and that now Fiorentina officials will work to try and convince Walace to make a switch to the club.

The defensive midfielder has been ever-present for Grêmio so far this season, making nine appearances in the Brasileirão.

He broke into the first-team last term and featured 19 times in the league, after making his debut as a substitute in a 2-1 win against Atlético Mineiro, in April 2014.

Walace has also represented Brazil at under-20 level and was part of a side that finished fourth at the South American Youth Football Championship, which was held across January and February in Uruguay earlier this year.

Fiorentina’s interest in him stems from an expected loss of some notable midfielders over the next month, or so.

Italy international Alberto Aquilani has already departed after his contract was not renewed, while David Pizarro and Andrea Lazzari could follow.

Slovenia international Jasmin Kurtić, who has subsequently joined Atalanta, also returned to owners Sassuolo following a loan spell.
