Juventus are stepping up their pursuit of Fluminense midfielder Gerson, according to reports.

The website of respected Sky Sport Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims that the Serie A holders have tabled an offer of €17 million, with €3 million added on depending on a future resale of the player.

The report suggests that Fluminense officials are mulling over the proposal, but if they accept the terms, it is possible that Gerson could head to Italy next week to undergo medical examinations.

One potential stumbling block in Juventus’ push to secure an agreement is Barcelona. The Catalan giants have an option to buy Gerson and could, in theory, veto any attempts from elsewhere to secure him.

Di Marzio believes however, that Juventus may be able to take advantage of Barcelona’s current transfer ban, which expires in January 2016, to purchase Gerson, while it has also been suggested that their interest in Juve’s France international Paul Pogba is another negotiating tool that they could use.

Gerson has long been highly-rated at Fluminense and finally made his first-team debut in the Campeonato Carioca earlier this year.

The 18 year-old, who has been capped by Brazil at under-20 level, has gone on to feature nine times in the Brasileirão and provided one assist. He is contracted to Fluminense until December 2019.
