Sampdoria have completed the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fernando.

The 23 year-old – full name Fernando Lucas Martins – has long been pursued by Sampdoria and a deal has now finally been concluded.

The Serie A outfit will reportedly part with around €8 million, with the fee to be paid across two years. The player will arrive in Italy on the weekend to undergo his medical and put the final touches on his contract agreement to finalise the move.

Sampdoria, who also announced the capture of Paraguayan midfielder Édgar Barreto from Palermo, pursued Fernando following the departure of Pedro Obiang to West Ham United for a reported fee of €6 million.

Both he and Barreto will cover the loss of the Spaniard, with Fernando bringing to an end his two year stay with Shakhtar.

The Brazil international – capped eight times since debuting in 2012 – cost Shakhtar €11 million when they signed him from Grêmio in July 2013.

With the Hirnyky, he won the Ukrainian League and Ukrainian Super Cup, while he was also part of the Brazil squad that won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Speaking on Fernando’s move to Sampdoria, club President Massimo Ferrero outlined that he has made a significant financial sacrifice to secure the deal.

“He’s a great player,” he told Radio Radio, as reported by website Football Italia. “I had to take out a mortgage to get him.”
