Brasileirão holders Cruzeiro finally secured their first win of the campaign on Thursday, when they defeated Flamengo.

Defender Manoel struck the decisive blow on 78 minutes, with Cruzeiro holding on to a 1-0 victory.

The result comes in the wake of the departure of Head Coach Marcelo Oliveira, who was sacked after a start that saw his side pick up just one point from their opening four matches.

Oliveira’s replacement, Vanderlei Luxemburgo, won the Brasileirão title during his first stint with the club, back in 2003, and will hope this victory can put them back on track to defend their crown this term. He will also take personal satisfaction from beating Flamengo, who he left in May.

That win for Cruzeiro leaves just Flamengo, who they beat, Vasco da Gama and Joinville still waiting for their first victories.

The latter’s fate is already looking worrying. Across five matches they have managed just one point and one goal and were beaten 2-0 by Chapecoense on Wednesday.

Vasco also lost convincingly, with both Jordi and Gilberto sent off as they went down 3-0 at home to fellow newly-promoted side Ponte Preta, who are now 2nd.

Just one point adrift of the Macaca are São Paulo. They won an enthralling encounter 3-2 against Santos, with goalkeeper Rogério Ceni netting an 85th minute penalty to secure the win.

At the top of the standings, Atlético Paranaense maintained 1st spot with a 1-0 victory at home to Figueirense. Nikão got the only goal.

Sport Recife are also highly positioned, in 3rd, after Maikon Leite’s 93rd minute strike condemned Goiás to a first defeat of the campaign.

Elsewhere, Grêmio continue to thrive following the departure of Head Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. Goals from Giuliano, Marcelo Oliveira and Luan gave them a 3-1 at home to Corinthians, for whom Stiven Mendoza netted.

On Thursday, Atlético Mineiro continued their strong start to the season with a 4-1 win at Avaí, while Fluminense defeated Coritiba 2-0.

A day later, Palmeiras and Internacional drew 1-1, with Rafael Moura cancelling out Vitor Hugo’s opener.
