Called up by coach Dunga on Wednesday morning after Luiz Gustavo was forced to withdraw from Brazil’s Copa America squad through injury, Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred spoke with media about his future goals with the Seleção.

It is the second time that the 22-year-old has been called into the squad at the last minute due to an injury, but he is no less proud because of it: “I thank God every day for these occasions,” he said.

“Last year, I was called up because of the injury to Romulus. Today, it happened again. I am happy to be here, I’m blessed. I have to do my job here. “

Fred hopes to win the Copa America, but he also cannot help but think on 2016 and the Rio Olympics looming on the horizon: “Of course, we must work hard and win the Copa America. This competition may enable young players like me to mature. We must listen to our elders, take their advice to the letter and remember everything for the Olympic Games taking place with next year. “
