Brasileirão holders Cruzeiro suffered their third defeat in four matches after being beaten 2-1 at Figueirense.

Goals from Marquinhos Barbosa and Carlos Alberto secured a first win of the season for the Furacão, with Henrique netting for Cruzeiro, who had Willians sent off for picking up two yellow cards.

That defeat leaves Cruzeiro joint bottom of the standings, alongside Flamengo and Joinville, on one point a piece. The latter were beaten 2-1 at home to Atlético Paranaense, while Flamengo lost 3-2 against Fluminense.

That win for Atlético Paranaense moved them ahead of Sport Recife at the top of the table. Eduardo Baptista’s side are only a point adrift, but needed a 93rd minute equaliser from Samuel Xavier to secure a 2-2 draw at Santos.

Level with Sport on eight points are Ponte Preta and Goiás. The former beat Chapecoense 3-1 on Saturday to maintain their unbeaten start following promotion, while Goiás drew 1-1 at home to Grêmio.

Elsewhere, another newly-promoted side, Avaí, maintained their positive early season form with a 2-1 victory at Coritiba, Internacional were held to a 0-0 draw against ten man São Paulo and veteran midfielder Zé Roberto netted in a 2-0 win for Palmeiras at Corinthians.

Finally, Thiago Ribeiro bagged a brace to help Atlético Mineiro move up into 5th with a 3-0 win at home to Vasco da Gama, who are still searching for their first win of the season.
