Steven Gerrard says team-mate Phillipe Coutinho is the ‘next big thing’, after the Brazilian cleaned up at Liverpool’s end of season award ceremony.

Coutinho was named Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year during Tuesday evening’s event, and also picked up awards for the Performance of the Year and Goal of the Year.

And Steven Gerrard, accepting his own award for long-time service to the club ahead of his impending move to Los Angeles Galaxy, took the opportunity to pay tribute to the former Vasco Da Gama midfielder.

He said: “I’m bored of speaking about myself, so I want to pay tribute to Philippe tonight.

“I think this is his night. He’s cleaned up tonight on all of the awards and deservedly so, it’s an absolute privilege to share a dressing room with him.

“He’s the next big thing, for me, I hope he stays here for a long time and he can help win us some more trophies.”
