Holders Cruzeiro opened the defence of their title with a 1-0 defeat at home to Corinthians.
With crucial second legs of their respective 2015 Copa Libertadores de América Round of 16 clashes to contend with in the coming days, both teams fielding rotated line ups for the clash at Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto.
A solitary goal by Paraguayan forward Ángel Romero – his first for the club – was enough to secure a win for Corinthians, who won the corresponding fixture last season by the same scoreline.
Elsewhere, Internacional also seemingly had the Copa Libertadores on their mind, as they were thumped 3-0 by Atlético Paranaense.
That margin of victory was matched by Sport Recife, in their 4-1 win over Figueirense. Goals from Matheus Ferraz and Régis Salmazzo, either side of a brace of penalties by Diego Souza secured the win and ensured Sport would end the first round of fixtures top of the standings.
Of the newly-promoted sides, only Joinville failed to secure a result. They were beaten 1-0 by Fluminense due to a late strike by Vinícius, while Vasco da Gama, Avaí and Ponte Preta drew against Goiás, Santos and Grêmio respectively.
Ponte Preta, in particular, showed great character to come from two goals behind with ten men to secure a 3-3 draw at Grêmio, for whom Yuri Mamute netted a brace.
Elsewhere, Rafael Marques’ 95th minute strike earned Palmeiras a 2-2 draw at home to Atlético Mineiro and Chapecoense beat Coritiba 2-1.
At Estádio Cícero Pompeu de Toledo, there was also a 2-1 victory for São Paulo against Flamengo, with Alexandre Pato and Luís Fabiano scoring for the home side.
