Mazinho is confident that his son Thiago will secure a new contract with Bayern Munich in the near future.

The former Brazil international, who won the 1994 FIFA World Cup, represents Thiago and would like to see his current deal extended beyond June 2017, when it is set to expire.

Mazinho believes that Head Coach Pep Guardiola’s choice to bring Thiago with him from Barcelona in July 2013 for a reported fee of €25 million gives the Spain international an edge in negotiations, but is unsure when an agreement can be reached.

“About this [contract] issue, I have no idea. I have my player there, he is not just my son, I"m his legal agent," he said, as reported by website Four Four Two.

“When you have the opportunity to play with the manager who brought you to Germany it is important and I want his new contract. I believe they can renew the contract. I hope so.

“Thiago has a unique quality. In my time as a player, I was different, even in the same position. He"s a midfielder with great technical skills, and when playing one on one he has an easy solution."

Thiago has had mixed time at Bayern Munich since arriving at the club. The 24 year-old has featured just 34 times due to injury and this season he has continued to be hampered, managing only nine appearances in all competitions.

After missing much of the campaign, he is now fully fit and expected to feature when Bayern face his former club Barcelona in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final on Wednesday.

As well as coming up against his old employees, Thiago will also face off against his brother, Rafinha.

For Mazinho, to have his two sons potentially on the pitch against each other is satisfying, though he concedes he cant favour one over the other.

“I support both, I sit on the fence. For me, without any doubt it"s a huge source of pride," he stated.
