Roma defender Maicon is unlikely to play again this season due to a persistent knee injury, according to reports.
Sky Sport Italia, as cited by website Football Italia, suggests that the 33 year-old has little chance of being involved before the campaign ends.
Maicon last played for Roma in a 2-0 defeat to Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals at the start of March and hasn’t featured in Serie A since a 1-1 draw with Empoli in January.
Reports recently claimed that Roma were considering offering a mutual termination to the attacking full-back at the end of the season due to his knee problems, despite his contract expiring in June 2016.
If the Brazil international – capped 76 times – cannot prove his fitness, then that option could become a reality, with a move to Major League Soccer seen as a possible solution further down the line.
The loss of Maicon for much of this campaign has hampered Head Coach Rudi Garcia. The Novo Hamburgo native, who was signed on a free transfer from Manchester City in July 2013, managed two goals in 31 appearances in all competitions last season, but has featured just 19 times this term.
