Pelé has offered his support to the 2026 FIFA World Cup being awarded to the United States.

The tournament has not been to North America since United States hosted it in 1994 and Pelé sees them as the outstanding candidates for 2026, should they chose to bid for it.

"Oh, yes. No doubt. No doubt,’’ he told The New York Post, as reported by website mlssoccer. "I am one who did some work for the World Cup to be here, and the organisers were perfect. They deserve it, no doubt, for the vote in FIFA to give them the next World Cup.’’

Whether United States will bid for the tournament is currently unclear. They had an unsuccessful attempt at winning the hosting rights for 2022, but Qatar were eventually awarded it instead.

FIFA revealed in March that the nation that will receive the 2026 tournament will be announced in May 2017, which gives the United States time to formulate a bid, if they so wish.

Speaking in October 2014, CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb made it clear that he thinks that the 2026 FIFA World Cup should definitely be awarded to a North American nation.

"Unfortunately, when the rotation stopped, it affected CONCACAF more than anyone else," he said, as reported by mlssoccer. “We believe [the 2026 FIFA World Cup] should be our World Cup and there should not necessarily be a debate — only what country it should be in."
