Roma Head Coach Ruid Garcia has admitted he does not know when defender Maicon will return to fitness.

The 33 year-old last played for the Giallorossi in Serie A in the 1-1 draw with Empoli in January and has only featured in a Coppa Italia quarter-final defeat to Fiorentina since.

A problem with the cartilage in his right knee has been hampering him for much of the campaign and with the issue still not resolved, Garcia concedes he is not sure when the Brazilian will be able to play again.

“The problem is that he takes one step forward and two steps back,” he stated, as reported by website Football Italia.

“He has a delicate problem with his knee and I expected him to be back in shape earlier. Now one day he’s fine, another less so.

“We’ll have to get together and find a better explanation for his condition. I hope for him and for us that he can be back soon.”

Maicon was signed by Roma from Manchester City on a free transfer in July 2013. Last season, he featured 31 times for the club in all competitions, scoring twice, but this term he has managed just 19 appearances.

The Novo Hamburgo native is contracted to Roma until June 2016, but there has been suggestions that his contract may be terminated at the end of this campaign if his knee problem persists.
