The Brazilian international was rushed back from injury for the match because of a defensive shortage and, having started on the bench, was called upon to take the pitch after just 21 minutes when compatriot Thiago Silva was injured.

The 27-year-old defender was given a torrid time by Luis Suárez as Barcelona won the Champions League quarter-final first leg 3-1 in the French capital, suffering the ignominy of being nutmegged for each of the Uruguayan’s goals. Luiz subsequently came in for a wave of criticism for his display, both in the media and online. However, Regina Celia has since taken to social media to offer support to her son and urge him to keep his head up for the remainder of the campaign. She wrote on Instagram: “We are proud of you, David Luiz. I’ll always have you as a son, keep your head up. God knows everything! Jesus fights for us, who are we to judge! I will always love you, in good games and much more when things are not going so well.”
