Hulk remains hopeful of earning a return to the national team, having failed to make an appearance since Dunga’s appointment as coach.

The Zenit St. Petersburg forward was included in Dunga’s maiden squad for September’s games with Colombia and Ecuador, but his late withdrawal through injury caused some confusion and sparked rumours of a fall-out with the coaching staff. Hulk told Globo: "I am still working for another opportunity. We know it is difficult for the coach and we have to respect his decisions. There are lots of players with a lot of quality. It is up to me to keep working hard and wait for another chance. I was not disappointed or frustrated [not to be called up]. We have empty seats and if someone gets up, another sits down in this place. You have to wait to claim your seat again. It"s hard to talk about it. I speak with other players because they are my friends, but I do not know the reason for not being called up. I believe it is Dunga’s choice."
