FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio has defended Head Coach Antonio Conte’s decision to call up Sampdoria forward Eder for the Italy national team.

The former Juventus tactician has been criticised in some quarters for selecting Eder, who was born in Brazil, but Tavecchio believes their should be no controversy surrounding his inclusion.

"Anyone with Italian citizenship can play for the national team," he said, as reported by Football Italia.

"The matter is closed. With an oriundo [Mauro Camoranesi] we won the 2006 World Cup, and Conte has absolute freedom to identify who can play."
