Barrie Mitchell turned out for Vancouver Whitecaps against Pele’s New York Cosmos.

Merseyside pub landlord Barrie Mitchell beat Pelé, Eusebio, George Best and Franz Beckenbauer to a Man of the Match award in a game in America. Barrie was playing for Vancouver Whitecaps in the old American Soccer League of the 70s when he came up against the four legendary world greats, who were all playing for the New York Cosmos. Barrie said: “We were due to play the New York Cosmos and the Vancouver owner invited me and a Dutch team mate up to his mansion the night before to do some media work. I met Pele there and he was so taken with my broad Scottish accent that he kept asking me to talk. He was laughing and pushing his finger at my mouth telling me: ‘Say it again, say it again’. The third time he did it, I snapped forward and playfully bit his finger.”
